As part of our History topic on Famous People the children have learnt about the life and work of Florence Nightingale.
To support this topic a theatre group from Yorkshire visited school to deliver an interactive workshop.
This performance really brought the topic to life.
The children thoroughly enjoyed asking and answering questions, dressing up, singing and participating in drama activities. |

We have also set up our role play area in the classroom as the hospital in Scutari where Florence Nightingale went to help and nurse the injured soldiers.
The children had great fun dressing up and re-enacted what they had learnt.
As well as supporting the history topic it has also encouraged and developed speaking and
listening skills.
The children have also enjoyed finding out about two other famous people; another nurse called Mary Seacole who travelled from Jamaica to help British soldiers during the Crimean War and Guy Fawkes who tried to blow up the Houses of Parliment!

Our science work in the Autumn Term was all about keeping healthy.
As part of this topic we have looked at exercise and the benefits of it for leading a healthy life.
We have discussed different types of exercise and sporting activities that the children do out of school.
We also talked about the importance of eating fruit and vegetables as part of a balanced diet. |
|
At the start of each school year each class is encouraged to think of their own class rules and these are displayed as a class charter.
The children enjoy Art activities. Our topic in the Autumn was Portraits. The children have drawn themselves and their friends using a variety of media including crayons and paint. The children have also looked at the work of different artists who have painted famous portraits.
The children enjoyed sketching their own portraits for their Christmas calenders. |
The children have a daily literacy lesson looking at a variety of text types. They always enjoy reading stories from our range of big books. one of these we have looked at is called ‘The Shark with no Teeth’. A lot of writing activities have been stimulated from reading this book including writing a letter pretending they were Cruncher the shark to thank Sheila the shark who very kindly made him a new set of teeth out of sea shells!
The children have also been busy writing poems, stories and instructions on how to make a variety of things. |

The children have a daily numeracy lesson. During the Autumn term we concentrated on addition and subtraction. We have also been learning how to count in multiples of 1,2,5 and 10 to help learning of times tables. We made number rockets with some of these number patterns. We have been measuring in metres and centimetres and learning to tell the time.

In 2/1 PS and 2/1 PW, we did a project about shapes. We learned the names and properties of common 2d and 3d shapes, and then we looked at symmetry.
We learned that symmetry means having exactly the same on one side of a line as on the other and that we can use a mirror to check the line of symmetry. We had great fun using our mirrors to complete pictures and make patterns. We coloured, painted, used pegs and boards and computers to explore symmetrical shapes, pictures and patterns.

In R.E. we have looked at Signs and Symbols in different places of worship. The children enjoyed visiting St. Thomas' Church and the Sikh Gurdwara,
both situated in Wednesfield to look at the different artefacts and find out how people worship in each place. |

All year 1 and 2 children had a part in our Christmas play 'Sleeping Beauty.'
The children had great fun rehearsing it and learning the songs and dances in it. Although it was a lot of hard work for five weeks it was well
worth it!
Excerpts of music from Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty were used to dance, move and act to.
The costumes were extremely colourful and some wonderful props added to a fantastic performance by all the children.

During the last couple of weeks of the Autumn Term the children have been busy making Christmas cards, calendars, angels and decorations for the tree.
The children practised their cutting skills to make their penguin or Christmas tree cards which they were very proud of, we hope you liked them too! |
