Our Science work in the Spring Term was about Materials and Forces.
As part of the 'Materials' topic we learnt to sort materials according to their properties. We did lots of messy experiments involving heating different foods and melting ice cubes. Year 1 children had fun with magnets and testing different materials for water resistance.
As part of the forces topic we enjoyed a visit to the park to explore the play equipment. We discussed the forces at work including pushes, pulls, gravity and friction.
Year 2 had great fun doing experiments with toy cars. We explored how far each car travelled with different height slopes and on different surfaces.
We also had a pleasurable time looking at toys with different moving parts.
The children were encouraged to experiment and find out how the different toys moved either by pushing or pulling a button or a winding mechanism.
This was a very popular activity! It wasn't all play, the children then drew and labelled the moving parts in their books!
A lot of literacy work this term was about traditional stories. We looked at well know ones like Little Red Hen, Chicken Little and Rumpelstiltskin. We also looked at ones from other countries such as Japan and China. The children particularly enjoyed reading the story of Ma Liang and the Magic Brush. This Chinese traditional story is about a poor Chinese boy who was given a magic paint brush by an old man. Ma Liang was able to draw pictures for poor people with this magic brush and they came alive. We wrote some wanted posters and made a colourful display in the classroom because the King put him in prison but he escaped. The King was therefore keen to recapture him! Also the children enjoyed acting out parts of this story and thinking about what they would draw if they had
a magic brush.
Our R.E topic in the Spring Term was ‘New Testament Stories’ We learnt about many miracles that Jesus performed and the parables he told. The children enjoyed listening and discussing the meaning of these stories including the Ten Lepers, Jesus and the storm, Jesus healing the blind man and Zacchaeus. We thought about the messages these gave us to help us live a better life and empathise with others.
Our Spring Term Geography topic was all about maps and the United Kingdom. The children enjoyed looking at what objects look like from above and drawing them. They had a go at drawing their own plan of their bedroom. The children particularly enjoyed drawing their own treasure maps with symbols and a key. We looked at a map of the United Kingdom and discussed the four countries and who has visited each one.
Maths work in the Spring Term began with work on Multiplication. Many children are now learning their times tables for their weekly Maths Club test. Lots have successfully gained their 10, 20, 27 and 34 club certificates. Some children have even passed the 45 club and are now working on the final club, the 55 club. We have covered a lot of work on money including totalling coins, using decimal notation and
finding change.
Measure, space and shape lends itself to lots of practical activities particularly weighing (mass)and data handling. We solved problems relating to these and
other topics too! Some of the pictures are of us creating symmetic patterns with cubes.
We have also revised addition and subtraction and have explored lots of different methods of finding answers, including doubling and halving.
Our school took part in an Egg Care Challenge to support the work of the Children's Charity Barnardo's. A fundraiser from Barnardo's spoke to the children in an assembly about work being done to help children, young people and their families. The children were offered the chance to decorate and look after a hard boiled egg for one week, while collecting kind donations from family and friends
giving our school the opportunity to make a BIG difference to the children and young people being helped by Barnardo's.
Our Design and Technology topic this term was Vehicles. The children have had great fun designing, making and evaluating their own vehicles out of shoe boxes with working axles and moving wheels. Prior to designing and making their vehicle the children were given the opportunity to make vehicles with the construction kits.
They also had a go at designing a vehicle in their I.C.T lesson, we certainly created some colourful designs. To see the other pictures we have created in this term during our I.C.T lesson click on the GALLERY link button on the main menu - well worth a visit!
In circle time in Y 2/1 we all sit in a circle and everyone is encourage to listen to each other discuss concerns, debate moral values, practise positive behaviour and work out solutions and action plans in an
enjoyable and fun context.
‘Talking Ted’ is passed around the circle. When you are holding him it is your turn to speak and for everyone else to listen.
Often ‘Freddy Fox and Bradley Bear’ visit, usually needing some help from the children to sort out their problems.
This term we have been thinking and talking about what we are good at and what we would like to achieve.
We have each set ourselves some ‘Goals’ that we would like to reach and put them into a booklet for everyone to read.
During the year we change the role play area into different themes related to our class topics. This term we have been looking at different houses and homes where we live and what these different houses are called. We have created an estate agents with examples of different properties to buy.
As part of our PSHE work the children have discussed emotions, such as sad, angry, happy and jealous. The children had great enjoyment creating their face designs showing one of these emotions!
On Wednesday the 16th June all Year 1 and Year 2 children went on an educational visit to the Black Country Museum. This visit was to link with our history topic on houses and homes. When we got there we split into four groups and each group had their own guide for the day. The children thoroughly enjoyed looking at the Victorian houses and finding out what life was like in Victorian times. The children particularly enjoyed visiting the “back to back” houses where the family lived at the front of the property and another family lived at the back. Some families had so many children they had to eat their meals on the stairs! We all had lessons in the Victorian School room, practicing writing with chalk and slates. We also found out what happened to naughty children and teachers… Some groups were lucky enough to have a ride on a tram and most of the children had the opportunity to play with some Victorian games and toys. We had a super day, the weather was glorious and the visit certainly brought the topic alive for the children.
On Wednesday 23rd June Year ½ went to St Thomas’ Church in Wednesfield to celebrate “the marriage of Sophia Clarke and Jack Jones.” The bride looked stunning in a long white dress and was accompanied by “her father” Mr Callum Webster and four bridesmaids, Ellen Potts, Millie Himan, Fraya Leek and Maya Dhaliwal. The groom was very smartly dressed in waistcoat, white shirt and trousers with a very distinguished Paisley tie and was accompanied by his best man Jake Housley. The ceremony was led by the Revered who explained the promises the happy couple were to make. The congregation were very pleased to be part of such a wonderful occasion. The wedding reception was held in the grounds of D’Eyncourt Primary School which had been beautifully decorated with balloons and silver horse shoes. The best man’s speech was enjoyed by everyone and was followed by the cutting of the wedding cake which was later eaten and enjoyed by Year 1 and 2. The bride and groom’s first dance was enchanting and was performed to a song from the popular High School Musical. The day ended when everyone threw confetti over Sophia and Jack and wished them good luck for their future lives “together!”
Our class assembly was held on the morning of the 7th of July and was very well attended by parents and grandparents. It was all about minibeasts which has been part of our science topic this summer term. The children said a poem we had learnt and shared some paintings and information about a variety of minibeasts. The main part of the assembly was a play called "Caterpillar Boogie." "Caterpillar Boogie." is a little musical which tells simply and clearly in words, songs and dance the life cycle of the butterfly. The children thoroughly enjoyed learning the catchy songs and were very keen to help with the dancing and acting. They spoke clearly and sang enthusiastically. The children as well as having fun also learnt a lot through performing the musical.
Parents and grandparents who attended also thoroughly enjoyed it too!
We have introduced a new video link area on our Learning Platform.
These videos will be updated and added to each new term when possible.
