Our school activity videos
Year 3/4 have been really busy during the Autumn term studying the Romans for their history topic. The Romans were very clever people. They designed roads, baths and central heating!
Using ICT the children have been “investigating mosaic patterns” and designing their own patterns connected to Roman mosaics.

During Year 3(SO's) work on symmetry, the children were able to use ICT to design some wonderful personal logos. The logos included pictures and patterns that the children though represented themselves. They then had great fun guessing which person each logo represented.
In a practical art lesson the children made clay tiles which they then made into colourful mosaic patterns; these were used as Christmas calendars at the end of term.
As part of our topic on the Romans the Timezone theatre company came to visit us in school. We spent the day learning how the Romans changed the lives of the Celts living in this country.

We dressed up in Roman and Celtic costumes and held a Celtic tribal meeting. This involved a lot of banging of spears and shields to try to intimidate the opposing tribe. In the afternoon we became Roman soldiers and practised our military moves and war and building skills. We also learned how to write some of the Roman alphabet with quills and on wax tablets using a stylus.

Here some of us were learning how to build an arch which amazed us that it stood up on its own!

The Timezone experience provided a unique blend of living history, role-play and theatre creating a dynamic 'hands - on' experience. The children learned so much during the day and found it really interesting and fun!

This term the science topic we studied was – 'light and shadows'. We started the topic by thinking about different light sources. We then learned what causes a shadow and where they can be found. We had fun making shadows on the playground both on our own and with partners and in groups. We also enjoyed experimenting with making animal shape shadows with our hands.

On Wednesday 21st October 2009, two ladies from the Wolverhampton Council’s energy efficiency team came to talk to years 3, 4 and 5 about how we can save energy and how we can help save our planet by doing so.
The session started with the children answering questions about saving energy. All the children could give examples of how they could save electricity and water.
The children played a game looking at different objects that could help save energy in the home: including a letter box draught excluder, energy light saving bulbs, radiator thermostatic valves, timer switches, loft insulation and awind up torch that doesn’t need batteries amongst others. Each object was then discussed and explained how
it saved energy.
The children were encouraged to go home and see if they had these things in their homes and if they didn’t to ask their parents if they were able to buy some of them. Several of the children came into school the next day and told their teachers that their parents were considering buying some of these energy saving devices which would help reduce their bills as well as helping the planet!

Several different experiments showed us that shadows get shorter throughout the morning and then longer again after midday. Our favourite experiment was the one where we drew round Holly's shadow at 4 different times of the day.
Holly is 136 cm tall but at 9.15 am her shadow was 375 cm, 239 cm longer than her! The display in the corridor really helped us understand how the lengths of shadows change throughout the day.
During science week the year 3 and 4 children had the opportunity to carry out some cross-curricular activities related to their science topics this term – light and shadow and magnets and springs. On the Tuesday afternoon the activities were literacy based.

Using the word pads the children were able to: play a game of bingo, play charades in groups and make up their own wordsearches. On the Wednesday afternoon the activities were numeracy based. The children repeated the experiment “How strong is each magnet?” and recorded their results as: a tally chart, a pictogram and a bar chart. Our favourite experiment was finding out which magnet was the strongest by seeing how many paper clips a magnet can hold in a chain.

On the Thursday afternoon the activities were art based and the children made a lantern or a stained glass window. These reinforced the concepts of: light being able to change the colours of papers and the terms translucent, transparent and opaque.

As is traditional in December, D’Eyncourt Choir (from years 3, 4 and 5) performed Christmas carols. They attended two church services and really impressed the congregation!
The first service was held at St.Thomas’s Church and was attended by choirs from all of the primary schools in Wednesfield. We performed “New Boy Born” adapted from the recently composed
“Manchester Carols”.
“Singing Around The Tree” was held as usual at Wimborne Road Methodist Church. The choirs of D’eyncourt and Wodensfield traditionally perform a selection of songs at this service each year. This year, we sang “New Boy Born” and “Dormi Dormi O Bel Bambin”. We also joined with Wodensfield to sing “A  Starry Night”. Well done everyone! You were a credit to D’Eyncourt.

We recently took part in an evening performance at the Civic Hall along with 22 other schools that thrilled the audience with a dazzling display of song, dance and drama.
Our 42-strong choir of 7 to 10 year olds sang a song called Refuge, a song that celebrates the joy of caring for others in a multi cultural society.

In technology this term, years 3 and 4 designed moving Christmas cards for their families, incorporating a lever mechanism. They chose a Christmas character and gave it a moving part. They then tackled making their designs using their knowledge of simple levers. The results were stunning!

In food technology, they also designed and made a Christmas cookie as a special gift. All children made plain cookies and thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

They designed an edible decoration which would make the cookie into a gift for someone they knew. Then, using a variety of finishing techniques, they completed their cookies which looked too good to eat!

We have introduced a new video link area on our Learning Platform.
These videos will be updated and added to each new term when possible.
