Our school activity videos
We have also been learning about rocks and soils.
We grouped the rocks using different criteria and we drew and described the different rocks. We enjoyed doing a scratch test to find out how hard the rocks were. We also learnt about which rocks were permeable and which were not (impermeable). Aren’t all soils the same? Well actually no, they are not! We were surprised at how the soils differed by colour, texture, particle size and even the smell!

As part of our science topic “Helping plants grow”, one of the experiments carried out in the three Yr3 4 classes was the celery and carnation experiment. This experiment was not as successful as we had hoped it would be but it did demonstrate how water is taken in and travels up the stem and into the leaves of the celery and the petals and leaves of the carnation. Adding red and blue dye to the water helped us see where the water ended up.

On Friday 14th May, Yr 3 4 Sts assembly was all about teeth. It started at 2.30 (tooth hurty, ha-ha). It was all about the different types of teeth we have and how to look after our teeth. We have four different types of teeth that all have different jobs: incisors, canines, molars and premolars.
We need to look after our teeth by: brushing our teeth regularly with fluoride toothpaste, eating healthy food, not eating too many sweets and sugary foods and visiting the dentist on a regular basis.
The children performed the poem “Oh I wish I’d looked after my teeth”, which was written my Pam Ayres many years ago. They also thoroughly enjoyed singing and dancing to the song “the toothbrush rap” which was written by Mr Horton, especially for the assembly.

On Thursday 27th May, Yrs 3 and 4 held a bring and buy sale where all the children brought in any toys, games, books and comics that they no longer played with or needed. Lots of items were brought in, all in very good condition and because the most expensive items were sold for only 50p the children went home with many bargains.
As well as reusing the toys and games (a very valuable way of improving the environment we live in), the children raised £65 which will be used to improve the school environment.

The children in Yr 3 4 enjoyed the activities on the website
www.ngfl-cymru.org.co.uk
It was all about different types of soil, the different parts of plants and how plants grow. It was fun finding the information from a website and being able to solve puzzles by being a soil detective and playing games with a friend whilst learning at
the same time.
We investigated the Runic alphabet and learned about Anglo-Saxon manuscripts, then we made illustrated letters using our initials.
Our drama lessons gave us the opportunity to enact the discovery of the ship and to think about what should happen to the treasures
found on it.

This term years 3 and 4 were given the Design and Technology task of making desk or dressing table tidies using reclaimed materials. They began by deciding what needed to be stored in the tidies and who they were for. They drafted an initial design. They then kept a look out for items of rubbish that were of a suitable shape, size and material to be used in the tidy. Once these were collected, they updated their designs and began making them. The results were excellent and most tidies seem to have stood the test of time on desks across Wednesfield!

In history as part of our topic on the “Vikings” we found out about the longships and looked closely at the figureheads that were on the prow (front end) of the ship. We used papier mache and tubes to make a figurehead. After painting it we needed to make it as fearsome, ferocious, frightful and frightening as possible so we added bloodred eyes, fangs, tongues and scales.

This term, 3SO’s assembly had an environmental theme. They performed a short play which made us think about the rubbish we throw away and whether we could change our habits for the better. They told us about the four “r”s: reduce, recycle, re-use and repair.
REDUCE your energy consumption.
RECYCLE plastic, glass, paper, card and aluminium.
RE-USE items if you can.
REPAIR things rather than throw them away when they are broken.
If we all follow these rules we can improve the environment for the better.
The assembly finished with a song called “Recycle It!” which was accompanied by instruments made entirely from rubbish!

As part of our “Improving the Environment” topic we visited the recycling bins at Somerfield.  We were amazed to see that so many different things could be put into the bins to be recycled. There was even a bin for teddy bears! The teachers noticed that there were many more bins than there were two years ago and hopefully in the future there will be the chance to recycle even more objects. However, we were disappointed that there were no facilities for recycling plastic bottles and think that this should be addressed.

Symmetry is often a favourite topic in numeracy. Finding the lines of symmetry on a shape and then drawing the lines of symmetry on other shapes needs care and accuracy but for lots of children it is more fun than sums!

In the Spring term the yr 3/ 4 children studied myths, legends and fables in their literacy lessons. As well as finding out the features of each one and reading examples of each, the children wrote some of their own.
Our school took part in an Egg Care Challenge to support the work of the Children's Charity Barnardo's. A fundraiser from Barnardo's spoke to the children in an assembly about work being done to help children, young people and their families. The children were offered the chance to decorate and look after a hard boiled egg for one week, while collecting kind donations from family and friends giving our school the opportunity to make a BIG difference to the children and young people being helped by Barnardo's.

Year 3 Road Safety Training
Year 3 children have been learning how to safely cross a road.  During classrooms sessions, two cartoon characters, Togo and Nogo, helped children learn using short video clips and games. With Togo and Nogo’s help they learned:

The Green Cross Code

  • Where to cross a road safely
  • Why we should keep our feet behind the kerb
  • The parts of vehicles and what they are called
  • How to cross driveways and near bends in road
  • How to cross at a junction
  • How to tell if a parked vehicle is about to move
  • How to cross between parked cars (only if there is nowhere else safe to cross)

With the Road Safety team, the children then went  outside school for a practical roadside session.  Look at our photographs of the day, and see if you can spot what we are doing right and what we are doing wrong!

Trip to Dudley Environmental Zone
On 21st May Year 3 and 4 visited the Environmental Zone.  It was a beautiful sunny day – just the right conditions for outside activities.  The children enjoyed 3 different experiences during the day.  Linked to our topic of Improving the Environment, the children had a walk around the nature area of the zone.  During this walk many of the children spotted rubbish which had been carelessly left about, including some larger items.  This was used as a starting point for discussing how people can affect the environment in negative ways and the importance of disposing of rubbish and litter in a responsible manner, including recycling.   The second activity was pond dipping.  The children, and adults, used nets to catch wildlife from the pond and try to identify what they had caught using picture cards given.  Everyone thoroughly enjoyed this and no-one got too wet!  Mrs Deeming is the queen of newt catching!  The final activity was orienteering around the grounds.  This was great fun and allowed everyone to let off a bit of steam.  The instructor was very impressed, as to how well the children did for a first attempt.  Well done everyone.
A great day was had by all.  We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and learnt lots too.
A brilliant trip!

This term, Mr. Jones, Cameron’s father and Parent Governor, visited years 3 and 4. He told us all about his work for the company “Enterprise” which specialises in waste management. He showed us some very interesting pictures of landfill sites and explained what happens to the rubbish after we have thrown it away. He certainly made us think. Thank you Mr. Jones!

Y3/4D and Y3/4St have designed an advert for the 5 a Day Healthy Eating campaign.  Their advert included a catchphrase, pictures, text boxes and information aimed at a particular target audience. They then held a Healthy Eating Party where they enjoyed chopping, slicing and preparing various fruit and veg.  You can see them enjoying - or should we say devouring – the produce!

5 A DAY – THAT’S THE WAY!

We have introduced a new video link area on our Learning Platform.
These videos will be updated and added to each new term when possible.
