In science this term we have been learning all about porous materials. We found that the sponge was the most porous. We could tell air was escaping from the sponge, because we saw air bubbles in the water.
We learnt new key vocabulary such as; absorb, porous, saturated, evaporate, condensation, air holes and saturation point.
We tried to use this vocab when we explained the processes of the experiment!
During this term we have been studying ‘Changing Sound’. We investigated how sounds are made, how they travel, how to change their qualities and we investigated which materials enhance sound or those that muffle and absorb them.
As part of our India topic work, Y5 W have been studying Rangoli patterns. We have each made our own Rangoli tile using colourful tissue paper. Some of us tried to make our patterns symmetrical after the work we have recently done on symmetry in art.
While learning about the different types of art in India, we learned about the body painting style of Mehnidi. Mednidi patterns are a temporary tattoo printed onto the hands, feet and face for special occasions such as weddings. Using our own hands as templates, we created our own patterns based upon the themes of nature.
In Y5/6 P we looked at the conservation issues that surround the survival of the Bengal Tiger in the wild. During our art lessons we drew the tiger and explored how effective the stripes are in camouflage for this magnificent animal!
Our school took part in an Egg Care Challenge to support the work of the Children's Charity Barnardo's. A fundraiser from Barnardo's spoke to the children in an assembly about work being done to help children, young people and their families. The children were offered the chance to decorate and look after a hard boiled egg for one week, while collecting kind donations from family and friends
giving our school the opportunity to make a BIG difference to the children and young people being helped by Barnardo's.
In Year 5/6 we have been learning about the Fairtrade organisation and its aims.
The Fairtrade Organisation guarantees that workers in developing countries receive a fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work.
To find out more, we took part in lots of activities:
We had a class FAIRTRADE shop where we chose whether to buy FAIRTRADE or non-Fairtrade chocolate, tea, coffee and bananas. We got to taste the FAIRTRADE chocolate – it was delicious.
Using the internet, we further researched FAIRTRADE and made a list of the products available and where we can buy them from. These products range from bananas to flowers to footballs! We used an atlas and Google map to locate the countries involved.
We looked at the FAIRTRADE symbol and either recreated it or designed our own symbol using the Fairtrade colours. We also made a FAIRTRADE Easter card.
We enjoyed making a Fairtrade Banana and Chocolate Chip Muffin, and
we enjoyed eating them too!

During Y5/6 T's topic on India we have been learning about how tea is grown and harvested. We carried out more detailed research as a basis for our class assembly and not only learned about the history of team, but how it became such an important part of our culture in Britain. The pictures are from the day of our assembly. We had a tea tasting challenge which we invited Miss Williams to be our taster, she managed to guess 2 teas
out of 4 right!
Y5 have has a 'litter picking' session. We have learnt how important it is to keep our environment clean. We have set up a litter picking rota to make sure we all help!
Y5/6 have been looking at the painting styles of pointillists and impressionist movement.
Using oil pastels we have been recreating these styles, using colours in such a way that they mix in your eye, not on the painting!
Y5 in Literacy have studied poems from different cultures. We looked at "The Pow - wow drum" by David Campbell. In groups we performed our own versions of this poem.
Some children used actions, props and musical instruments! We really enjoyed acting and reciting!
By David Campbell
Long black braids and silken shawls
Moving side by side where the eagle calls,
Amswering the beat of the ow-wow drum
we come again
to dance again
Leave the dusty cities far behind,
Meet our brothers of the country with one mind,
Travelling from the east, north, south and west
we come again
to dance again
Watching close the feet of lightening fly
Fancy dancer free underneath the sky,
Joining in the circle moving round and round
we
come again
to dance again
Woman shining like the morning sun,
Children making rainbows as they laugh and run,
The old and young meeting like they did long ago
we come again
to dance again
The Year 6 netball team have has a successful year. They won the Wednesfield League! Well done. As Wednesfield winners they got to play in the Wolverhampton finals, which unfortunately they didn’t win. They also represented Wolverhampton at the Black Country Games. We had a great day out! Congratulations to Frankie, Chelsea, Laura and Alicia who have been selected to trial for South Staffordshire Under 12s. Miss Williams wants to thank all the Year 5’s who have started netball club. They have played in a friendly against Long Knowle and look like the making of
a brilliant team next year!
Our Year 4’s have also been involved in netball this year. They have participated in some development sessions at Health Park. We’ve had great fun! Miss Williams is looking forwards to these girls
joining netball club next year.
Y5 have a trip to our local fire station every year, to learn about fire safety. This year, as usual we learnt all about hazards in our home and how we can prevent fires.
We learn about the importance of the fire brigade and the wide range of work they do for our community!
We got to look round a fire engine and climb the practice tower which is very high and very scary!
We got to have a go on the hoses on the fire engine! Sometimes we got a bit wet!
We also practiced the 'drop and roll' technique just in case our clothes were to ever catch fire!
Y5/6 have been designing and sculpting vases or pots in an Ancient Greek style. We have researched the decorative patterns used by the Greeks and tried to create our own 'important events' to depict
on our vases.
The Y5 trip this year was an 'Ancient Greek' day. TimeZone came into our classroom and changed it into a meeting place. We all dressed up to look like Greeks. We had a community meeting to decide whether we thought the Spartans or Athenians should lead Greece. The Athenians won the vote!
We played Ancient Greek games and learnt the rules. We learnt the Ancient Greek alphabet and wrote messages to each other, even had a maths lesson using Greek numbers! We then learnt about how to get into a Phalanx (an army formation) to protect ourselves.
The Timezone experience provided a unique blend of living history, role-play and theatre creating a dynamic 'hands - on' experience. The children learned so much during the day and found it really interesting and fun!

In 5W we have been studying bread in our D.T sessions. Bread was a big part of the diet in Ancient Greek times and still is today.
We have discussed all the different types of bread and what meals we would eat eat then with, such as naan bread with curries.
We then had a tasting session to decide which bread we liked
best and why.
Year 6 visited the 'Poineer Centre' for a residential visit in July.
After 3 days at the centre the children had found out just how much fun the visit was. All the children loved the centre and were delighted with the activities, the bedrooms and the food! The children all has great fun taking part in the activities that included: caving, raft building, rock climbing, abseiling, archery, fencing, initiative games and high ropes. Some of the activities like the high ropes really challenged the children to overcome their fear of height, but everyone felt good about themselves when they had tried climbing the very tall pole!
The parents of Year 6 organised a leavers 'beach party' toward the end of term which the children really enjoyed, even if there were a few tears at the end of the evening! For more pictures click on this link to go to the LATEST EVENTS PAGE.
I will try and put some of the y5/6 leavers production videos on the link below towards the end of the 6 weeks holiday.
To all Year 6 children good luck for your futures and take great care over the holidays - best wishes Miss Townsend x
